Critically-Acclaimed Play RED Transfers to Teatrino, 8/23-24

Manila, Philippines, July 13, 2013--Actor's Actors Inc.'s The Necessary Theatre, in cooperation with the U.P. School of Economics Alumni Association, will transfer the 2010 Tony Award-winning play "Red" from the College of Saint Benilde-School of Design and Arts in Taft Avenue, Manila to Teatrino, Greenhills, San Juan on Friday, August 23, to Saturday, August 24, at 7 p.m.

Seasoned theater actor and director Bart Guingona reprises his role as Mark Rothko, one of America's most controversial painters; Joaquin Valdes reprises his role as Ken, Rothko's fictional assistant.

"Red," written by prolific American playwright and screenwriter John Logan ("Any Given Sunday," "Aviator"), focuses on Rothko's inner struggle of integrity when the painter is offered a large commission for several murals for the Four Seasons restaurant in New York City. For two years, Rothko works on three sets of murals until he is satisfied. The murals are progressively dark, whose colors range from orange to brown, from maroon to black.

Ken brashly questions Rothko's theories of art and the painter's acceptance of commercial projects.

"[RED] unfolds as a combative Socratic dialogue between teacher and pupil, a master class of questions and answers about the methods and purpose of Rothko's art. 'I am not your teacher,' Rothko says, shortly after meeting Ken. But he sure sounds like it," wrote Ben Brantley, the chief critic of The New York Times.

The play "turns out to be more a study in artist appreciation, a portrait of an angry and brilliant mind that asks you to feel the shape and texture of thoughts," Brantley added.
